Humanitarian Crisis in West and Central Africa: Flooding Claims Lives and Displaces Thousands

Severe flooding in West and Central Africa has led to over 1,000 fatalities and the displacement of 740,000 individuals, impacting more than 5 million across 16 countries. Chad, Niger, and Nigeria are the most affected, with significant damages to infrastructure and food security concerns. The United Nations (UN) reported that severe flooding across West and Central Africa has resulted in the loss of over 1,000 lives and the displacement of at least 740,000 individuals. These challenges are affecting more than five million people across 16 countries, as stated in a recent announcement made in Istanbul. Heavy rainfall has been the primary cause of these floods, severely impacting areas within the central and western parts of Africa, including the Sahel. The countries most affected by this calamity include Chad, Niger, and Nigeria, which collectively account for over 80% of the total population impacted by this disaster, according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). The flooding has inflicted significant damage on infrastructure, with numerous homes, educational institutions, and healthcare facilities destroyed. Furthermore, around half a million acres of farmland have been lost, leading to dire implications for food security and an increase in malnutrition, especially in Chad and Niger. The precarious living conditions in the aftermath of the floods have also heightened the risk of waterborne diseases, such as cholera, particularly in Niger and Nigeria. To mitigate this crisis, Joyce Msuya, the UN’s Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Deputy Emergency Relief Coordinator, has mobilized $35 million to support relief efforts across Chad, Niger, Nigeria, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Congo. Nonetheless, additional funding remains urgently required to address the extensive needs in these regions. In Nigeria, specifically, $5 million has been allocated to support approximately 280,000 individuals, focusing on the provision of food, clean drinking water, and shelter, alongside efforts to preempt cholera outbreaks. However, it is important to note that the Humanitarian Response Plan for Nigeria, totaling $927 million, is only 46% funded according to officials.

The increase in flooding within West and Central Africa can be attributed to heightened rainfall resulting from seasonal weather patterns, compounded by climate change factors. The region has particularly struggled with disaster response and recovery due to existing socio-economic challenges, including poverty, inadequate infrastructure, and the ongoing impacts of other humanitarian crises. Flooding not only poses immediate risks to life and displacement but also leads to long-term effects on food security and public health, particularly in vulnerable communities.
