A United States C-17 military aircraft transporting 104 undocumented immigrants recently landed in Amritsar, India. Among those deported, individuals recounted harrowing experiences while attempting to enter the US via the so-called “donkey route.” A Punjab native shared a distressing account of traveling through Italy and Latin America, citing theft and endurance during their perilous journey.
One deportee noted, “We crossed 17-18 hills. If one slipped, then there would be no chance that he would survive… We have seen a lot. If anybody got injured, he was left to die. We saw dead bodies.” This individual’s statement highlights the dangerous conditions faced by those seeking illicit entry into the United States. The group consisted of migrants primarily from Punjab, Haryana, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Chandigarh.
Another deported individual, Jaspal Singh, claimed he was defrauded by a travel agent who had promised a legal pathway to the US through a visa, charging ₹30 lakh. Singh detailed that, after arriving in Brazil by air, he was misled and forced into illegal border crossing into the US, resulting in his detention by US Border Patrol.
Upon their arrival in Amritsar, the deported individuals were subjected to questioning by various government authorities, including Punjab Police and intelligence agencies, to ascertain if they had any criminal records. This process is critical for ensuring public safety and legal compliance following their return to India.
The issue of illegal immigration, particularly involving dangerous smuggling routes, continues to be a pressing global concern. Many individuals risk perilous journeys in search of better opportunities abroad, often falling victim to human traffickers or deceitful agents. This recent deportation highlights the dire circumstances many face when attempting to enter the United States unlawfully, illustrating the physical dangers and emotional toll associated with such endeavors.
The experiences shared by the deported individuals underscore the severe risks of illegal immigration. From perilous crossings over treacherous terrain to deception by unscrupulous agents, these narratives reveal the harsh realities faced by many. The need for legal avenues for migration and better protection for vulnerable individuals remains critical.
