Discovery of Migrant Bodies Highlights Ongoing Irregular Migration Crisis in Libya

The Libyan Public Prosecutor’s Office reported the discovery of 28 bodies believed to be those of irregular migrants and the release of 76 detained individuals. Investigations have led to criminal charges against Coast Guard officials implicated in smuggling operations, while numerous Egyptian migrants have been arrested and repatriated as part of enhanced security measures against illegal migration.

The Libyan Public Prosecutor’s Office disclosed that 28 bodies, presumed to belong to irregular migrants, were discovered buried near a detention facility in southeastern Libya, specifically north of Kufra. Furthermore, the authorities reported the liberation of 76 migrants who were held in forced detention. Forensic specialists have been engaged to ascertain the cause of death while testimonies are being gathered from the victims who were detained.

In a separate inquiry, the Libyan Public Prosecutor’s Office took action against the head of the Coast Guard in Zuwara city, leading to the arrest of four Coast Guard members on suspicions of attempting to smuggle irregular migrants across the Mediterranean Sea. Evidence indicated that these members had planned to transport 37 migrants and resorted to gunfire against Criminal Investigations Department personnel who intervened.

Following the interrogation of the four suspects, they were remanded in custody, with directives to identify additional security and military personnel involved in the illicit operation. The rescued migrants are to be relocated to shelter centers while their situations are being assessed, as stated by the Public Prosecutor’s Office.

The Libyan Ministry of the Interior earlier reported the apprehension of numerous Egyptian irregular migrants, who were subsequently repatriated to Egypt. This action is part of the ministry’s broader initiative to bolster security and combat irregular migration. Security personnel from the Joint Security Room in the Western Mountains apprehended several irregular migrants along with vehicles that had been reported stolen.
