Recently, Myanmar’s military government announced the rescue of over 1,000 individuals from cyber scam centres located near Thailand. This rescue operation, part of a broader crackdown on human trafficking, took place over the last three weeks and involved the identification of approximately 1,030 foreign nationals, primarily from Asia, including India and China, as well as some from East Africa. The government has initiated the repatriation of victims, having already returned 61 individuals to their home countries.

As reported by the United Nations, the cyber scam operations are extensive, resulting in the trafficking of hundreds of thousands of individuals forced into illegal activities. Criminal organizations along the Thai-Myanmar border reportedly generate billions of dollars each year from these illicit operations. Following the abduction of Chinese actor Wang Xing earlier this year, Thailand has intensified its efforts to dismantle these operations, including cutting off essential supplies to border areas in Myanmar.

In a recent statement, it was reported that Thailand’s army had processed 260 human trafficking victims from Myanmar, with a significant number originating from Ethiopia. This systemic abuse has sparked increased international attention and response as both Thailand and Myanmar continue to work towards eradicating these criminal networks and aiding the victims.
