Nigeria Calls for Investigation into Footballer Abubakar Lawal’s Death in Uganda

The Nigerian government has demanded a thorough investigation into the death of Abubakar Lawal, a Nigerian footballer in Uganda. Hon. According to authorities, Lawal’s death occurred under suspicious circumstances on February 24, 2025, after he allegedly fell from the third floor of Voicemall Shopping Arcade. Preliminary investigations revealed that Lawal had arrived at the shopping mall to meet a friend, Omary Naima, a Tanzanian national. While Lawal was preparing tea in Naima’s room, he reportedly fell from the balcony at approximately 8:00 am, and despite being rushed to Entebbe Referral Hospital, he was pronounced dead shortly after.

Items belonging to Lawal, which included two smartphones, a pair of shoes, headsets, a training kit, and chargers, were recovered from his backpack. As the investigation progresses, police are retrieving CCTV footage and conducting thorough interrogations to ascertain the events leading to the incident. There is a strong emphasis from Nigerian authorities on ensuring a transparent investigation without any cover-ups.
