Abduction of Oyo Corps Member Raises Alarms Over Safety Concerns
Rofiat Lawal, a corps member serving in Ibadan, was kidnapped along the Benin-Ore Expressway while returning from Benin City. The abductors are reportedly demanding ₦20 million for her release. The NYSC Coordinator has confirmed the incident and stated that security agencies have been alerted.
A distressing incident has occurred involving Rofiat Lawal, a member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) who is currently serving in Ibadan, Oyo State. Lawal was abducted by unidentified gunmen along the Benin-Ore Expressway while returning from Benin City, Edo State, to her designated place of primary assignment. Reports indicate that the kidnappers are demanding a ransom of ₦20 million for her release.
According to a social media post by a friend, Agbakwara, Lawal was traveling in a bus bound for Ore when she was taken. Agbakwara expressed concern for Lawal’s safety, highlighting her determination to support herself through university and her current predicament. The friend reported her desperation for support, stating, “I have reported to the NYSC secretariat in Ibadan and dropped her call-up number, but there has been no response. We are exhausted and desperate for help!”
The Oyo State NYSC Coordinator, Odoba Oche, confirmed the abduction in a conversation with media representatives. He stated that security forces have been notified of the situation for appropriate action. Additionally, he noted that the NYSC was previously unaware of the incident before Lawal’s parents reported it.
Oche emphasized the organization’s continued reminders for corps members to inform authorities prior to traveling and to avoid night journeys due to safety concerns. He affirmed, “We have contacted the National Headquarters, the Ondo and Edo states NYSC and we have also alerted security agencies for necessary action.”
The abduction of Rofiat Lawal has raised significant concerns regarding the safety of National Youth Service Corps members in Nigeria. The NYSC has urged its members to adhere strictly to travel guidelines to ensure their safety. The demand for a substantial ransom by the kidnappers reflects the growing trend of abductions for financial gain, prompting calls for swift action by authorities.
