Mozambique: INAM Forecasts Tropical Cyclones Honde and Garance
INAM predicts the formation of two tropical cyclones, Honde and Garance, near Madagascar, with the potential for strong winds and rainfall in Mozambique from Honde. While Garance may also develop, it poses no threat to the country. Caution is advised, particularly for maritime navigation.
The National Institute of Meteorology (INAM) in Mozambique has announced the potential formation of two tropical cyclones, “Honde” and “Garance,” expected between Thursday and Friday near Madagascar. Tropical Storm Honde, currently located about 250 kilometers off the coast of Inhambane province, is forecast to intensify into a tropical cyclone and may bring strong winds and varied rainfall across Mozambique. While it remains at sea in the Mozambique Channel, its influence on atmospheric circulation could generate rain inland.
Meteorologist Lelo Tayob indicated that although Tropical Storm Honde directly impacts the ocean, the resultant air masses could produce rain in the mainland regions of Mozambique. Additionally, Tropical Storm Garance, situated east of Madagascar, is poised to evolve into a tropical cyclone but is projected to remain distant enough to avoid affecting Mozambique’s continental area. Tayob emphasized that Garance’s trajectory is away from the mainland, mitigating any potential threats to the country.
The meteorologist stressed the necessity for precautionary measures as these weather systems develop, particularly concerning maritime navigation. Adverse weather conditions in the Mozambique Channel may necessitate heightened awareness among sailors and coastal communities as the cyclones progress in their respective courses.
In summary, INAM has foreseen the development of Tropical Storms Honde and Garance, with Honde expected to cause rainfall and strong winds in Mozambique due to its proximity. While Garance may also intensify, it is not expected to impact Mozambique directly. The public, especially those involved in maritime activities, should stay vigilant and take necessary precautions as these systems evolve.
