Police Investigate Suspected Human Trafficking Syndicate in Eldama Ravine

Police in Eldama Ravine are investigating a suspected human trafficking case after 20 women, appearing malnourished and lacking identification, were found in a vehicle that was flagged for speeding. Authorities are working to uncover details and collaborate with transport officials to ascertain vehicle ownership and the women’s final destination.

Police in Eldama Ravine are currently conducting an investigation into a potential human trafficking syndicate after apprehending a vehicle carrying 20 women under suspicious circumstances. The women appeared malnourished and lacked valid identification documents at the time of their discovery.

The incident occurred when traffic officers flagged a Toyota Hiace for speeding at the Makutano junction along the Nakuru-Eldoret highway. The driver, however, fled the scene, prompting officers to question the women and file a report at the Makutano Police Station before transferring them to the Koibatek Sub-County Police Station.

Koibatek Sub-County Police Commander Joel Chepkwony reported that the women were dressed in traditional buibuis and did not possess identification cards. Richard Cheruyot, the Officer in Charge of Criminal Investigations, revealed that the women are aged between 20 and 25 years, originating from diverse locations such as Mombasa, Kakamega, and Nairobi among others.

Cheruyot stated that the women would remain at the police station as investigations into the suspected human trafficking operation continue. “We are working to uncover the details of the case and identify those involved,” assured the officer. The police are also coordinating with the National Transport Services Authority to determine the vehicle’s ownership and ascertain the women’s intended destination.
