M23 Expands Recruitment Efforts in Bukavu Amid Hostilities

The M23 rebel group is conducting a major recruitment drive in Bukavu in response to a recent terrorist attack that they attributed to the Congolese regime. The recruitment has attracted numerous youths and defectors from local security forces. The situation reflects ongoing tensions and instability in Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo as the M23 group integrates new members amidst military challenges.

The M23 rebel group is actively engaged in a large-scale recruitment initiative in Bukavu, as articulated by their spokesperson, Lawrence Kanyuka, on February 28 after a violent incident occurred at a rally. This attack, attributed to the Kinshasa regime, resulted in the deaths of 13 individuals and more than 70 injuries, including women and children, as reported by the rebels.

A video shared by Kanyuka depicts a substantial gathering at Bukavu’s Place de l’Indépendance where many youths responded to a call by General Bernard Byamungu, a prominent rebel military figure, urging them to enlist and join efforts for national liberation. Following Byamungu’s encouragement, there was considerable enthusiasm among the youths, resulting in a rush to register.

In addition to new recruits, the M23 has integrated approximately 2,100 police officers and 890 soldiers from the Congolese government, following previous surrenders. These events occurred shortly after the M23 took control of Goma, the capital of North Kivu Province, underscoring the group’s expanding influence in the region.

The M23’s recruitment drive in Bukavu reflects their ongoing military strategy amid increased hostilities in the region. The group’s ability to attract defectors from the Congolese security forces highlights the shifting dynamics and challenges faced by the Congolese government.
