Following the shooting deaths of two local businesspersons during a traffic stop, anger has surged in Chagni town, prompting the arrest of six individuals, including a kebele administrator. Anger erupted in Chagni, a town within the Agew Awi Zone of the Amhara Region, following the tragic shooting of two young businessmen, Meseret Haymanot and Minale Wale, during a traffic intervention by security forces. In response to the incident, the regional government has detained six individuals, including a kebele administrator.

The victims, known for their hard work and entrepreneurial spirit, were engaged in a business renting out excavators and loaders. Witnesses reported that they were shot by security personnel while returning home on a rickshaw. An elder brother of Meseret lamented their loss, emphasizing their lack of political affiliations.

Bekele Mekuria, Chagni’s peace and security head, did not assign blame directly to the security forces. He suggested that the incident may have stemmed from hasty actions. “When the security forces observed a rickshaw in motion, they instructed the driver to halt. Upon his failure to comply, they resorted to gunfire,” he stated. The investigation is currently ongoing to uncover the truth behind the incident.
