Strong 6.1 Magnitude Earthquake Shakes Kathmandu and Surrounding Regions
A 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck Kathmandu early Friday, injuring at least four people and causing damage in Sindhupalchowk. The tremors were felt across many regions in Nepal and also in Bihar, India, where there were no reports of injuries or property damage. The seismic activity highlights the ongoing vulnerability of the area to such natural disasters.
Kathmandu experienced a powerful earthquake early Friday, resulting in at least four reported injuries in the region. The National Earthquake Monitoring and Research Centre indicated that the 6.1 magnitude quake, which occurred at 2:51 AM, had its epicenter located in Bhairabkunda, Sindhupalchowk district, approximately 65 kilometers east of Kathmandu. Reports suggest that various houses in Sindhupalchowk sustained cracks due to the tremor, which was felt throughout southern and eastern Nepal as well.
In the aftermath of the earthquake, many residents in Kathmandu and surrounding areas evacuated their homes in panic. Among the injured were two individuals in Kathmandu and a prisoner in Chautara who was injured while attempting to flee during the quake. Additionally, an elderly man in a Sindhupalchowk village was hurt while exiting his residence following the earthquake.
Nepal resides in a highly active seismic zone, classified under Seismic Zones IV and V, which considerably raises the risk of earthquakes. The most devastating quake recorded in the nation occurred in April 2015, with a magnitude of 7.8, claiming over 9,000 lives and destroying more than one million buildings.
The earthquake also triggered shocks in several districts of Bihar, India, with residents in Muzaffarpur and Samastipur among those who felt the tremors. Umesh Kumar Singh, a meteorologist from the Bihar government’s disaster management department, confirmed that the quake was detected around 2:35 AM, producing brief but noticeable tremors along the Indo-Nepal border. Thankfully, there have been no reports of property damage or casualties in the affected areas in Bihar.
Tremors were registered in various Bihar districts, including Muzaffarpur, Siwan, Patna, Gopalganj, Saran, and both West and East Champaran, among others. The earthquake in Nepal has sparked significant trending interest on Google in recent hours.
In summary, a strong earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1 struck Kathmandu, resulting in injuries and property damage in Sindhupalchowk. The tremors were felt significantly throughout various parts of Nepal and also across bordering districts in Bihar, India. Fortunately, no casualties or damage were reported from Bihar. This earthquake reiterates the seismic vulnerability of the Himalayan region.
