Kenya Meteorological Department Forecasts End of High Temperatures with Upcoming Rains
Kenya is currently experiencing high temperatures, typical before the long rains. Dr. David Gikungu announced that rainfall is expected to begin next week. The March-April-May forecast indicates warmer conditions nationwide, particularly in coastal regions, with below-average rainfall likely in certain areas. The peak of the rains is anticipated in May.
Kenya is currently experiencing high temperatures, a phenomenon that is common before the onset of the long rains, as explained by Dr. David Gikungu, Director of the Kenya Meteorological Department. Since December, temperatures have soared, reaching up to 32°C in the Highlands east of the Rift Valley, including Nairobi and Kiambu, while other regions have recorded temperatures exceeding 36°C.
In a recent interview with KBC, Dr. Gikungu stated that rainfall is expected to commence next week in Nairobi and other areas. He noted, “This season that we are looking to begin in mid-March is always preceded by very high temperatures.” He elaborated that the sun’s movement towards the equator leads to intense heating and low pressure, which in turn attracts winds that promote rainfall.
As these winds travel over water bodies, they gather moisture and generate clouds that induce precipitation, subsequently resulting in reduced temperatures. Last week, the Kenya Meteorological Department confirmed the beginning of the March-April-May long rains season, forecasted to start next week.
The Seasonal Weather Forecast for March-April-May (MAM) 2025 indicates the expectation of warmer-than-average temperatures nationwide, particularly increased probabilities in coastal and northern regions. Although specific temperature predictions for areas such as Nairobi, Kisumu, Nakuru, Mombasa, and Kiambu were not provided, there is an anticipation of near-to-below-average rainfall in the Highlands east of the Rift Valley and the coastal areas, with the peak of the rains projected for May.
In conclusion, the Kenya Meteorological Department predicts that the ongoing high temperatures will be alleviated by incoming rainfall, expected to commence next week. The seasonal forecast indicates warmer temperatures across the country, with the Highlands and coastal regions likely to experience less rainfall than average. While the current heat is normal before the arrival of the long rains, citizens should prepare for the impending weather changes.
