Senator Ortega: Candidates Silent on China Not Pro-Philippines

He expressed concern that candidates receiving funding from China pose a danger to Philippine sovereignty and could undermine national interests, especially regarding the West Philippine Sea (WPS).

Ortega indicated that these candidates should openly support the Philippines and display commitment to Filipinos, contrasting those who remain quiet against China’s actions with strong pro-Philippines candidates. He elaborated on the potential risks involved if pro-China candidates are elected, emphasizing the need for vigilance in protecting the nation from foreign influence.

The Representative noted past instances of China’s territorial claims over the Scarborough Shoal and WPS, fearing similar threats to Palawan, which seem to be in sight with some videos circulating on social media. He mentioned alterations to images depicting Palawan with Chinese flags, stressing the importance of maintaining sovereignty as clarified by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines, which states that Palawan has always belonged to the Philippines.

Ortega’s comments come amid heightened scrutiny of candidates aligned with China, especially those from the PDP-Laban and Koalisyong Makabayan parties, which have previously been accused of favoring Chinese interests. He referenced the need for increased maritime patrols in the WPS and challenged the assertions made by China regarding Palawan, labeling them as delusional.
