Morocco Reports Sustained Decrease in Measles Cases (Bouhmroun)

Morocco’s Ministry of Health reports a steady decrease in measles cases, or Bouhmroun, for the fifth week in a row, with cases declining by 13% recently. The success is attributed to healthcare efforts and public engagement in vaccination campaigns. Rabat – The Ministry of Health in Morocco has reported a consistent decline in new measles cases, known locally as “Bouhmroun”, for the fifth consecutive week. This positive trend is attributed to the government’s ongoing efforts aimed at controlling the viral disease’s spread.

From February 24 to March 2, cases dropped by 13%, totaling 2,481 reported cases to date. This decrease follows a 14.9% reduction in the previous week, where 2,863 cases were documented.

The ministry’s statement emphasized that this improvement stems from the dedicated efforts of healthcare professionals across Morocco, effective coordination among all stakeholders, and increased public involvement in vaccination campaigns, particularly during the national vaccination status verification campaign.

In response to the situation, the Moroccan Ministry of Health announced an extension of the vaccination campaign until March 28, ensuring families have access to essential vaccines. Despite the notable decrease in cases, the ministry remains vigilant, pointing out disparities in vaccination coverage among provinces.

Health Minister Amine Tahraoui reported that as of December last year, Morocco recorded 19,515 cases of Bouhmroun since October 2023, with 107 deaths, accounting for 0.55% of the total cases. Notably, half of the fatalities involved children under the age of 12, highlighting the need for targeted interventions for younger populations.
