Malawi Disaster Impact: Over 40,000 Households Affected by Rainy Season

The ongoing rainy season in Malawi has led to 40,178 households affected, with a rise in fatalities and injuries reported. The Department of Disaster Management Affairs has reached over 80 percent of affected households with necessary relief supplies and will continue to keep the public informed.

The Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA) indicates that the current rainy season has severely affected numerous households in Malawi. According to the latest report, a total of 40,178 households, impacting roughly 180,801 individuals, have faced various calamities, including stormy rains, hailstorms, and floods. This figure represents an increase from the 35,661 households documented previously on February 7, 2025.

As reported by DoDMA, 809 households have been displaced due to the disasters. The total number of fatalities has risen from 35 to 39; notably, 26 deaths were caused by lightning strikes and 13 resulted from collapsed structures. Recent tragic incidents include the deaths of two infants due to lightning in Mzuzu City and Nkhata Bay District. Furthermore, injuries have escalated from 469 to 483, predominantly due to lightning and structural damage.

In response to the crisis, the Department has provided assistance to over 80 percent of the affected households, distributing essential items such as maize, beans, blankets, and temporary roofing materials. The department continues its relief operations and committed to transparently updating the public regarding the disaster’s status and any further developments.
