The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a caution concerning heavy rainfall expected from March 7 to March 11, 2025, affecting multiple regions including the highlands, Lake Victoria Basin, and the Rift Valley. Isolated storms may occur, particularly over the weekend. Although most areas will experience hot and sunny weather initially, significant rainfall is forecasted to follow, while the North Eastern region will remain dry.
The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a warning regarding moderate to heavy rainfall anticipated throughout numerous regions of the country from Friday, March 7, 2025, to Tuesday, March 11, 2025. The advisory specifies that eight regions, including the highlands to the west and east of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, and both the Central and South Rift Valley, will be significantly affected. In addition to the expected rainfall, isolated storms may occur, particularly over the weekend.
The affected regions will experience predominantly sunny and hot weather followed by increased chances of rainfall from the weekend onwards. Areas forecasted to receive rainfall encompass the Coastal Region, southeast lowlands, the northwest, and segments of the southern coast. The Kenya Meteorological Department warns that while some areas will see rain, high temperatures exceeding 30°C are anticipated across most parts of the country, with the exception of the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, where temperatures should remain below 30°C.
Counties in the eastern highlands, such as Nairobi, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, and Tharaka Nithi, are expected to receive moderate to heavy rains from Saturday through Tuesday. On Friday, these areas will likely face hot and sunny weather before the rainfall begins.
Additional counties in the Lake Victoria Basin and Rift Valley, including Siaya, Kisumu, Homabay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet, and Nandi, are also predicted to experience heavy rainfall from Sunday, March 9, through Tuesday, March 12. Similar weather patterns are anticipated in Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia, and West Pokot.
Conversely, the North Eastern region, including Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, and Isiolo, will remain dry and sunny throughout the weekend. Additionally, the department has forecasted strong south-easterly winds exceeding 25 knots (12.9 m/s) in certain areas of northwestern and northeastern Kenya, potentially causing further fluctuations in weather patterns.
In summary, the Kenya Meteorological Department has warned of a week of heavy rainfall across various regions of Kenya, particularly highlighting the forecast for the highlands, Lake Victoria Basin, and parts of the Rift Valley. While many areas will experience initial hot and dry conditions, significant rainfall is expected to begin over the weekend, along with isolated storms. Conversely, certain regions, particularly in the North Eastern area, will remain dry. Authorities and residents should prepare accordingly for these anticipated weather changes.
