Investigation Launched After Bulawayo Detective Killed by Friendly Fire
Detective Constable Cassandra Hove, 37, was mistakenly shot by a police bullet during a confrontation with armed robbers in Bulawayo. Initially thought to be shot by robbers, her family was later informed of friendly fire. They are demanding a thorough investigation into her tragic death as they mourn her loss.
In Bulawayo’s Pumula South suburb, Detective Constable Cassandra Hove, a 37-year-old mother of four, tragically lost her life during a confrontation with armed robbers on Thursday night. According to a postmortem report, she sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the left breast, with the bullet remaining lodged within her body. Despite initial beliefs that she had been shot by the robbers, her family has since learned from police officials that she was killed by a bullet fired by a fellow officer.
Family spokesman Ryan Gambinga expressed the family’s devastation, stating their shock at the circumstances of her death. He noted, “The family is deeply shocked and troubled by the tragic circumstances surrounding her death… This revelation raises profound questions and intensifies our grief.” Gambinga emphasized the family’s commitment to uncovering the truth and obtaining justice while calling for a complete investigation into the incident.
Police Commissioner General Stephen Mutamba announced that comprehensive investigations are underway to clarify the events leading to Hove’s death. At the time of her passing, Hove was pursuing a new career after graduating with a degree in forensic accounting. She was a member of the Lozikeyi team, an all-female unit of detectives based at the Bulawayo Central Police Station.
The tragic death of Detective Constable Cassandra Hove has raised significant concerns regarding police conduct and the need for transparency in law enforcement actions. As the family seeks answers, the call for a thorough investigation signifies the importance of accountability in such distressing cases. The shocking revelation that her demise resulted from friendly fire rather than an encounter with robbers emphasizes the complexities and dangers faced by police officers in their duty to serve and protect.
