Scrap Dealer Sentenced for Theft of Ghana Water Limited’s Fittings

Tahiru Issah, a 20-year-old scrap dealer, was sentenced to 12 months in prison for stealing fittings from Ghana Water Limited. The police caught him during patrol with stolen items valued at GHS 3,250. Ghana Water Limited expressed appreciation for the court’s decision amid increasing theft cases affecting their operations.

The Ashaiman Circuit Court, under the leadership of His Worship Mr. Derrick Parden Eshun, has sentenced 20-year-old scrap dealer Tahiru Issah to twelve months in prison with hard labor for theft. He pled guilty to the charges during his court appearance on March 5, 2025.

According to Chief Inspector Henry Tetteh Nartey, the prosecuting officer, Mr. Issah, a Nigerien residing in Ashaiman’s Fitter Line, was apprehended by the Gbetsile District Police on February 26, 2025. During a routine night patrol, police discovered him carrying a black polythene bag, which raised their suspicions.

Upon searching the bag, police uncovered six stopcocks, six safety valves, and one return valve, all belonging to Ghana Water Limited, valued at GHS 3,250. Following his arrest, Mr. Issah was taken to the Afienya Police Station, where he confessed to stealing the items from local residents.

Dr. Samuel Eson, the Regional Chief Manager for Ghana Water Limited in the Tema Region, expressed gratitude for the court’s decision. He noted the company has been facing a surge in meter theft incidents, which have adversely affected operations. Dr. Eson urged the public to report suspicious activity and warned scrap dealers against engaging in theft, stating that those caught would face strict legal repercussions.

The conviction of Tahiru Issah highlights the ongoing issue of theft impacting essential services in Ghana. The authorities are urging community vigilance and cooperation with police to mitigate such criminal activities.
