Unauthorized Police Station in Uasin Gishu Raises Alarm Among Residents

Collins Letting operated an illegal police station in Uasin Gishu for six months, deceiving residents into believing it was legitimate, while local authorities were not aware of its existence. Police have launched an investigation to ensure community safety and address the concerns raised by residents.

In Uasin Gishu County, a man named Collins Letting has come under scrutiny after operating an illegal police station for six months without authorization. Located at the Cherus Centre in Kesses, this facility was disguised with police colors and allegedly supervised the local region, monitoring illegal timber trade from Cengalo Forest. Surprisingly, even the local chief was unaware of the station’s illegitimacy.

The illegal police station reportedly contained detention cells and an office, functioning without the required consent from the Inspector-General of Police, as mandated by the National Police Service Act of 2014. Authorities discovered this operation on March 8, 2025, and proceeded to document the illegal establishment at Kamuyu Police Post.

Local residents were deceived into believing the station was genuine due to Mr. Letting’s previous political connections. One anonymous individual expressed concern, saying, “I am shocked to learn that this was not a legitimate police station. If this is where we have reached (as a country), then as civilians we are not safe.”

Uasin Gishu County police commander Benjamin Mwanthi assured the community that investigations are underway to understand the full scope of the situation. He stated that a team from Kesses sub-County is expected to gather additional insights into the matter and to meet with locals about their concerns.
