Police Officer Samuel Tompoi Kaetuai’s body returned to Nairobi on March 10, 2025, following his tragic death during a peacekeeping mission in Haiti. His passing highlights the rising gang violence in Haiti and the risks faced by international peacekeepers. Kenya continues its commitment to restoring stability in the region despite these challenges.
The body of Police Officer Samuel Tompoi Kaetuai, who was killed during a peacekeeping mission in Haiti, arrived in Nairobi at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport on March 10, 2025. His arrival signifies a moment of mourning for Kenya as the nation honors its fallen hero.
Deputy Inspector General of the Administration Police Service, Gilbert Masengeli, led the delegation that received Kaetuai’s remains. Among those present were Senator Peris Tobiko, family members, and close friends, including his father, Salaash Kaetuai. The body was transferred to Chiromo Mortuary while the family prepares for burial arrangements, with the date for the final rites to be announced soon.
Officer Kaetuai’s death occurred during a peacekeeping mission in Haiti, where he was attacked by armed gangs. The Multinational Security Support Mission confirmed that he succumbed to his injuries, which were sustained during an operation. Efforts to rush him to the hospital for treatment were unfortunately unsuccessful.
Kenya’s Foreign Ministry Principal Secretary, Korir Sing’oei, shared his condolences on X, expressing his heartache over the loss of a member of Kenya’s peacekeeping forces. Kaetuai’s death highlights the perilous conditions in Haiti, which continues to struggle with rising gang violence, having recorded at least 5,601 deaths from such incidents in 2024 alone.
The violence in Haiti has led to the displacement of over a million citizens, as detailed by the United Nations. Despite the troubling situation, there was uncertainty regarding the peacekeeping mission in February when international funding was temporarily suspended. However, funding resumed following a waiver from US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, allowing the mission to continue.
Kenya’s ongoing deployment in Haiti aims to restore stability, yet the tragic passing of Officer Kaetuai serves as a grave reminder of the risks faced by peacekeepers operating in such volatile environments.
The arrival of Police Officer Samuel Tompoi Kaetuai’s body in Nairobi has evoked national mourning as Kenya reflects on the dangers faced by peacekeepers. His sacrifice during a mission in Haiti underscores the escalating violence in the region and the critical need for international support in peacekeeping efforts. The nation remains committed to honoring his memory while addressing the challenges in Haiti.
