Malawi’s Ministry of Transport Advocates for Increased Exports to Maximize Nacala Corridor Potential

Malawi’s Secretary for Transport, David Mzandu, emphasizes the importance of enhancing export volumes to optimize benefits from the Nacala Corridor. The ongoing development aims to reduce transport costs, with expectations set for completion by 2027. Key stakeholders from Malawi, Mozambique, and Zambia gathered to discuss the initiative’s potential in boosting regional trade and economic integration.

The Secretary for Transport and Public Works in Malawi, Mr. David Mzandu, has underscored the necessity for Malawi to enhance its export volumes in relation to imports to maximize the benefits from the Nacala Corridor’s development. This statement was made during the 9th Tripartite Meeting of the Nacala Development Corridor Management Committee held in Lilongwe, where he stressed the importance of reviewing ongoing projects and contemplating future objectives.

Mr. Mzandu pointed out that the management of the corridor is still in its early stages, with significant progress yet to be achieved. A particular advantage awaits in the form of lowered cargo landing costs, as much of Malawi’s cargo presently arrives via road from Beira and Dar es Salaam. The complete development of the Nacala Corridor is anticipated to drive these costs down substantially.

The meeting convened various stakeholders, including representatives from the private sector of Malawi, Mozambique, and Zambia, to exchange insights and discuss advancements. The project is designed to lower transport costs continually and promote trade integration among the three involved nations.

Mr. Ambrósio Adolfo Sitoe, Mozambique’s Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Transport and Logistics, recognized the potential of the corridor to create new opportunities not only for current cargo handling but also for future logistic requirements that are hampered by insufficient facilities. He emphasized that this initiative is pivotal for economic advancement and fostering regional collaboration.

Funded by the World Bank as part of the Southern Africa Trade Connectivity Project (SATCP), the development of the Nacala Corridor commenced in 2021 and is projected for completion in 2027.

The recent discussions at the Nacala Development Corridor Management Committee highlight the imperative for Malawi to enhance its export levels to leverage the economic opportunities created by the Nacala Corridor. With collaborative efforts among Malawi, Mozambique, and Zambia, the initiative promises substantial reductions in transport costs, thereby facilitating regional trade and economic growth.
