Meningitis Outbreak in Northwest Nigeria Results in 26 Deaths Since January

Nigerian authorities have confirmed that a meningitis outbreak in the northwest region has resulted in at least 26 fatalities since January. The outbreak began in Kebbi state, which reported over 200 suspected cases, as noted by Health Commissioner Musa Ismail during a press briefing in Birnin Kebbi.

In response to the outbreak, medical supplies have been distributed to affected areas, and isolation centers have been established to hinder further transmission. Nearby Sokoto state has also advised its residents to stay vigilant following reports of suspected cases.

Health Commissioner Faruk Abubakar of Sokoto urged individuals to take preventive measures and seek immediate medical assistance if they exhibit symptoms such as high fever, stiff neck, or severe headaches. Meningitis is prevalent during Nigeria’s hot season and poses a significant public health threat in the country, alongside malaria.

As one of the countries in the African Meningitis Belt, Nigeria had documented 2,765 suspected cases and 190 deaths between 2022 and 2023, according to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention. The World Health Organization reported 153 deaths from a similar outbreak in 2024.

Nigeria is working towards implementing a strategic plan approved in November 2020 by the World Health Assembly, which aims to eradicate meningitis by the year 2030. The nation’s fight against this disease comes amidst a lack of support from the United States Agency for International Development, which previously provided assistance in combating meningitis and other health crises.
