The Niger State Commissioner of Police has initiated a probe into an incident involving an intoxicated police officer who fatally shot a resident during a reckless spree. Identified only as Sani, the victim was struck while sleeping, and the officer attempted to harm another individual. The police command has promised accountability and further updates.
The Niger State Commissioner of Police, Shuwala Danmamman, has mandated an investigation into a tragic incident involving a police officer who allegedly killed a local resident during a drunken shooting spree. The Divisional Police Officer of Maitumbi has been tasked with identifying the responsible team involved in this serious misconduct.
According to reports from PUNCH Metro, the incident transpired on a Monday when the officer, assigned to the Metumbi Police Station, reportedly shot and killed a Niger State resident after consuming excessive alcohol. The unidentified officer escalated the situation by picking up his rifle and discharging it recklessly, resulting in the death of Sani, a resident from the Angwan-Kaje area of Chanchaga Local Government.
Witness accounts reveal that the officer targeted additional civilians, nearly shooting another individual who managed to escape in time. One eyewitness characterized the scenario as particularly tragic, indicating that Sani was struck while he was asleep. Additional threats were directed towards another local known as Mai Shayi, who was fortunate enough to evade injury while fleeing the scene.
Wasiu Abiodun, the spokesman for the Niger State Police Command, acknowledged the incident and confirmed that the Commissioner of Police had called for accountability. He reported that the shooting occurred around 3 a.m. on March 10, 2025, in the Angwan-Kaje area of Maitumbi, Minna, and detailed that further updates regarding the investigation would be disclosed to the public at a later time.
The incident underscores serious issues of conduct among law enforcement, particularly regarding alcohol consumption and the use of firearms. The Niger State Police Command’s commitment to investigating this shooting reflects an effort to uphold accountability and ensure public safety. Further developments regarding the progress of the investigation are anticipated as authorities seek to address this tragic event.
