Edo State Police Investigate Tragic Death of Two-Year-Old Girl in Accident
The Edo State Police have begun an investigation into the death of a two-year-old girl in a motor accident involving a commercial bus in Benin City. The accident, which occurred during an altercation between the bus driver and traffic officials, has resulted in calls for improved traffic regulation adherence. The girl’s mother is hospitalized, and authorities are working to identify the driver who fled the scene.
The Edo State Police Command has initiated a thorough investigation concerning a tragic motor accident that resulted in the death of a two-year-old girl in Benin City. This unfortunate event was reported by DAILY POST and took place on March 12, 2025, at approximately 5:30 p.m. in the Ring Road area. The girl’s mother is currently undergoing treatment in a hospital, though its location has not been disclosed.
According to Public Relations Officer Moses Yamu, the accident transpired when a white Vannette bus, registered as BEN 406 YA, collided with pedestrians in an apparent attempt to evade the Edo State Public Safety Response personnel. The incident claimed the life of the young girl, while her mother was injured but survived the ordeal.
Yamu reported that during the chaos, a member of the Public Safety Response suspected of contributing to the accident was rescued from an angry mob and detained for further inquiries. Investigative efforts are underway to locate the bus driver, who fled the scene immediately after the incident.
The police promptly attended the scene after receiving reports, with the Esigie Divisional Headquarters dispatched to manage the situation. The child’s lifeless body was taken to the hospital, where she was officially pronounced deceased. Investigators are also gathering evidence to clarify the circumstances surrounding the accident.
Commissioner of Police Betty Enekpen Isokpan has implored all drivers to adhere strictly to traffic regulations, respect authority, and remain patient while driving. “Every road user has the responsibility to protect his or her life and that of every other road user by obeying established road safety protocols,” emphasized Yamu.
It is reported that the accident was allegedly triggered by a struggle between officials of the Edo State Public Safety Response and the commercial bus driver as they attempted to control the vehicle’s steering. A source, who requested anonymity, stated that the confrontation began when task force personnel approached the driver for an undisclosed traffic infraction, leading to a sequence of events that ultimately led to the tragedy.
