Emergency Aid Distribution for Cyclone Jude Victims in Mozambique

The IOM will provide 2,800 emergency kits to those impacted by Tropical Cyclone Jude in Mozambique, which has resulted in at least 14 fatalities and affected over 100,000 individuals. The cyclone has caused significant destruction, including damage to health centers and homes. Mozambique’s rainy season continues to exacerbate the threat of cyclones and floods.

The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) has announced the distribution of 2,800 emergency kits to support victims of Tropical Cyclone Jude in Mozambique. These kits will be allocated to affected individuals primarily in the Zambézia and Nampula provinces. The IOM emphasized its commitment to providing essential assistance despite significant challenges faced on the ground.

Tropical Cyclone Jude made landfall in Mozambique on Monday, resulting in a tragic death toll of at least 14 and injuries to 60 individuals. The cyclone has impacted over 100,000 people across multiple provinces, including Tete, Manica, Zambézia, Nampula, Niassa, and Cabo Delgado. The kits prepared for distribution contain essential items like mats, mosquito nets, and blankets.

Government spokesman Inocêncio Impissa reported that the cyclone has destroyed 30 health centers and affected nearly 20,000 families. Additionally, over 20,000 houses have been partially or completely demolished, along with significant disruptions to schools and agriculture affecting thousands of students and teachers.

Mozambique is currently enduring its rainy season, which lasts from October to April. The nation has previously experienced the severe effects of Cyclones Chido and Dikeledi and has felt the brunt of climate change, facing cycles of both flooding and drought. Between 2019 and 2023, extreme weather events have resulted in over 1,000 deaths and affected nearly 5 million people according to the National Statistics Institute (INE).

The IOM’s distribution of emergency kits is a timely intervention for those impacted by Tropical Cyclone Jude in Mozambique. The cyclone has led to significant casualties and extensive damage, particularly to health infrastructure and housing. With climate change exacerbating weather-related disasters in the region, continued support and preparedness are essential to mitigate the effects of such extreme events and assist affected communities.
