Gloria Nobre’s Unlawful Detention Raises Human Rights Concerns in Mozambique
Gloria Nobre, treasurer for Venancio Mondlane, is illegally detained in Maputo without access to family or lawyers. Her detention lacks an arrest warrant. The Centre for Democracy and Human Rights is taking action against police violations of her rights.
Gloria Nobre, treasurer for former presidential candidate Venancio Mondlane, is reportedly being held illegally at a police station in Maputo. According to an article published in “Mediafax,” she was detained without an arrest warrant and lacks access to her family or legal representation.
On Wednesday, Nobre was apprehended by plainclothes police officers in the Alto Mae neighborhood while accompanying her daughter, Alina, following a visit to a cemetery. The officers allegedly displayed a document on a cellphone but did not provide any details regarding the reason for her detention, raising concerns within her family.
Alina expressed distress over her mother’s poor health conditions, which include high blood pressure and asthma. “I need to know how she is,” she stated, highlighting her fears regarding Nobre’s well-being during the detention.
Attempts made by the family’s lawyer to visit Nobre have been thwarted by the police, who illegally denied access. The Centre for Democracy and Human Rights (CDD) has organized three attorneys to assist her but faced similar rejections. The CDD announced intentions to file a complaint with the Attorney-General’s Office regarding the violation of Nobre’s rights to legal assistance.
Sources from the Criminal Investigation Service (Sernic), who requested anonymity, informed CDD that due to an ongoing investigation, neither Nobre’s family nor her lawyers would be allowed to see her for 48 hours.
In summary, Gloria Nobre remains unlawfully detained without access to family or legal counsel, raising serious human rights concerns. Her family, especially her daughter Alina, has voiced significant worries about Nobre’s health condition. The actions of the police and the denial of legal aid have prompted the Centre for Democracy and Human Rights to intervene, indicating potential legal repercussions for the authorities involved.
