Impact of Cyclone Jude on Education and Health in Mozambique

Cyclone Jude, which struck on October 3rd, brought winds reaching 195 km/h and torrential rainfall, resulting in substantial destruction to infrastructure, including roads, water systems, health facilities, and educational institutions. Reports from the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) estimate that as many as 17,000 children currently lack access to education, a number likely to increase.

The severe flooding following the cyclone poses additional health risks, especially the spread of waterborne diseases such as cholera and diarrhea, which are significant threats to the well-being of children. Furthermore, the destruction of key transportation routes is hindering the distribution of vital supplies, compounding the crisis as more than 730,000 Mozambicans already face devastation from previous cyclones, Chido and Dikeledi, which resulted in over 150,000 destroyed homes, 471 schools, and 100 health facilities.

Mary Louise Eagleton, UNICEF Representative in Mozambique, expressed concern, noting, “The impact of Cyclone Jude on hundreds of thousands of children and families already affected by Cyclones Chido and Dikeledi is devastating. Extreme winds and heavy rains have destroyed critical infrastructure and are depriving vulnerable children of essential services.” She further stated, “UNICEF is working with partners and the government to respond and meet the needs of those affected, but having already responded to two cyclones in the space of just a few months, we are stretched thin and urgently need additional resources.”
