The TOYOTA GAZOO Racing World Rally Team is poised to defend its unbeaten record during the 100th event in the FIA World Rally Championship at the Safari Rally Kenya from March 20-23. Since its debut in 2017, the team has excelled, achieving maximum points in the initial two rallies held in Monte Carlo and Sweden, marking a historic start to the WRC season.
Elfyn Evans leads the drivers’ standings and is coming off a successful win in Sweden. His teammate, Takamoto Katsuta, has a commendable track record in Kenya with three previous podium finishes. Kalle Rovanperä, who has previously triumphed in Kenya, poses a significant challenge as well. Sami Pajari will participate in this event for the first time with TGR-WRT2.
TGR-WRT boasts a strong legacy in the Safari Rally, having won all four editions since its return to the calendar in 2021. This year coincides with the 40th anniversary of Juha Kankkunen’s inaugural WRC victory. Kankkunen will also be making his debut in the role of Deputy Team Principal, enhancing the team’s leadership.
The Safari Rally presents unique challenges, featuring rough and rocky sections that can test the limits of the vehicles. Rain potentially complicates the course, turning dry roads into slippery mud. The rally has been expanded to include 384.86 competitive kilometers, making it the longest WRC round in recent history, beginning in Nairobi and incorporating several new stages including Mzabibu and Camp Moran.
The GR Yaris Rally2 will make its debut in Africa with four customer entries among the WRC2 competitors. Joint championship leader Oliver Solberg, along with Jan Solans, Diego Domínguez, and Kajetan Kajetanowicz, will aim to make a strong impact in this upcoming event.
