On Thursday evening, a Bangladeshi youth named Kamrul Islam, aged 33, was shot dead by two assailants in Wepener city, located in the Free State Province of South Africa. Originally from Karmullahpur village in Daganbhuiyan upazila, Feni, Kamrul was the second of five siblings and had relocated to South Africa twelve years prior to pursue economic opportunities. After initially working for others, he eventually started his own business.

Kamrul’s younger brother, Kamruzzaman, reported that the two attackers confronted Kamrul as he was closing his shop at approximately 9:00 PM. The assailants, armed and seemingly intent on robbery, threatened Kamrul at gunpoint and stole cash and valuables from the store. They then suspected additional cash was in Kamrul’s parked vehicle, prompting them to force him outside.

During an altercation at the vehicle, one robber shot Kamrul in the chest, resulting in his immediate death. His brother mentioned that Kamrul had recently constructed a new house in their village and intended to return to Bangladesh within a few months to marry. The family’s grief was compounded by the loss of their father, with their mother experiencing fainting spells upon learning of Kamrul’s fate.

The family has reached out to the Bangladesh embassy for assistance in repatriating Kamrul’s body. Additionally, SM Azharul Islam, the upazila nirbahi officer, affirmed that the local administration is prepared to assist the family in this matter if required.
