Tropical Cyclone Jude Causes Tragedy Across Mozambique and Malawi
Tropical Cyclone Jude has claimed nine lives across Mozambique and Malawi, with six deaths confirmed in Mozambique and three in Malawi. The cyclone caused extensive flooding, displacing thousands and damaging crucial infrastructure, thus hindering relief operations. Previous cyclones also had devastating effects in the region, highlighting ongoing vulnerability to such natural disasters.
Tropical Cyclone Jude has tragically resulted in the loss of at least nine lives across Mozambique and Malawi, as reported by officials on Thursday. The National Institute for Disaster Risk Management and Reduction (INGD) in Mozambique confirmed six fatalities, 20 injuries, and the displacement of 9,525 individuals in the provinces of Nampula, Niasa, and Zambezia, according to News.Az’s coverage of foreign media reports.
In Malawi, the cyclone has claimed three additional lives and rendered approximately 20,000 people homeless in the southern region, which experienced severe flooding. Chiphiliro Khamula, spokesperson for the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA) in Malawi, disclosed to Anadolu that those displaced are currently housed in evacuation centers for safety.
Having made landfall in northern Mozambique early Sunday, Cyclone Jude subsequently moved towards southern Malawi, where heavy flooding persisted from Monday to Wednesday. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) noted that the response efforts are being impeded by damaged infrastructure, including washed-out roads and bridges.
This incident follows last December’s Cyclone Chido, which inflicted significant loss of life in both countries, resulting in the deaths of 73 individuals in Mozambique and 13 in Malawi.
Tropical Cyclone Jude has caused significant devastation in Mozambique and Malawi, resulting in nine confirmed fatalities and thousands displaced. The heavy flooding and destruction of roads and bridges have severely hampered relief efforts, necessitating urgent humanitarian assistance in the affected regions. This recent cyclone adds to the tragic legacy of previous cyclones in the area, underscoring the ongoing vulnerability of these nations to severe weather events.
