Tropical Cyclone Jude Results in Deaths and Displacement in Mozambique and Malawi
Tropical Cyclone Jude has caused at least nine fatalities in Mozambique and Malawi, displacing thousands and causing severe flooding. Relief efforts face challenges due to damaged infrastructure, following previous cyclones that notably impacted the region. Immediate assistance is critical for the affected communities.
Tropical Cyclone Jude has tragically resulted in the loss of at least nine lives in Mozambique and Malawi, as confirmed by officials on Thursday. The National Institute for Disaster Risk Management and Reduction (INGD) in Mozambique reported six fatalities, with an additional 20 individuals injured and approximately 9,525 displaced across the northern provinces of Nampula and Niasa, and the central province of Zambezia.
In Malawi, the cyclone has claimed the lives of three people, leading to the displacement of around 20,000 residents in the southern region, where severe flooding occurred. Chiphiliro Khamula, spokesperson for the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA) in Malawi, indicated that those affected are currently being provided shelter in evacuation centers.
Cyclone Jude made landfall in northern Mozambique early on Sunday and subsequently moved towards southern Malawi, causing significant flooding from Monday through Wednesday. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has reported that ongoing relief efforts are being severely hindered by the destruction of roads and bridges.
This incident follows the devastation caused by Cyclone Chido in December of the previous year, which resulted in 73 casualties in Mozambique and 13 in Malawi.
Tropical Cyclone Jude has caused nine deaths across Mozambique and Malawi, leading to extensive displacement and infrastructural damage. The humanitarian response is being hampered by flooding and damaged transit routes. Past cyclones, such as Cyclone Chido, continue to highlight the region’s vulnerability to such disasters. Immediate relief efforts are essential to support the affected populations.
