Tropical Cyclone Jude has claimed the lives of at least nine individuals across Mozambique and Malawi. The National Institute for Disaster Risk Management and Reduction (INGD) reported that six fatalities occurred in Mozambique, with an additional 20 people suffering injuries and 9,525 displaced in the provinces of Nampula, Niasa, and Zambezia.

In Malawi, three fatalities have been confirmed, and approximately 20,000 people have lost their homes due to severe flooding in the southern region. Evacuation centers are currently sheltering those displaced, as noted by Chiphiliro Khamula, spokesperson for the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA) in Malawi.

Cyclone Jude made landfall in northern Mozambique early on Sunday, subsequently moving into southern Malawi. Heavy flooding persisted from Monday to Wednesday, hindering relief operations, as cited by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), due to washed-away roads and bridges.

This cyclone follows last December’s devastation when Cyclone Chido struck the same regions, resulting in 73 fatalities in Mozambique and 13 in Malawi. The continuing impact of cyclones in this area underscores the urgent need for effective disaster management and infrastructure improvements.
