In Huế, hundreds of children with congenital deformities received free surgeries and screenings through a collaboration between Huế Central Hospital and the Interplast Volunteer Surgical Team. Over 100 children benefited from this humanitarian effort, restoring their smiles and enhancing their confidence. The partnership, ongoing since 2016, has facilitated nearly 1,200 surgeries, with aspirations for broader treatment opportunities in the future.
In Thừa Thiên Huế, hundreds of children afflicted with congenital disabilities, such as cleft lip and palate deformities, have benefited from free medical screenings and surgeries, enabling them to restore their smiles and confidence. This initiative occurred from March 10 to March 20 at Huế Central Hospital, under the auspices of the Maxillofacial Centre and the Interplast Volunteer Surgical Team from Germany.
The humanitarian mission involved 13 medical professionals from Germany, Italy, Austria, and Spain, who conducted screenings and performed surgeries for over 100 children. The aim is to help these children reintegrate into society and improve their self-esteem through enhanced health.
Trần Thị Loan, a mother from HCM City, expressed deep appreciation for the hospital staff, entrusting her three-year-old son’s cleft palate surgery to their expertise. She assured her intention to register her child for future surgeries should the team return, underlining her hope for her son’s complete recovery.
Doctor Peter Schachner, a member of the Interplast team, emphasized their mission to provide high-quality medical care to Vietnamese children needing cleft lip treatment. He noted the seamless coordination between the Interplast team and Huế Central Hospital, made possible by the thorough preparations of the hospital’s doctors.
Cleft lip and palate deformities are significant congenital disabilities in Asia, affecting approximately one in 700 to 800 children in Vietnam. Such deformities not only impact health but also severely affect children’s confidence and communication abilities. Each year, the Maxillofacial Centre at Huế Central Hospital treats hundreds of patients suffering from these conditions.
Since its partnership with Interplast began in 2016, Huế Central Hospital has performed nearly 1,200 surgeries, enhancing their medical staff’s expertise through advanced surgical techniques and training opportunities in Europe and Southeast Asia. Doctor Nguyễn Hồng Lợi highlighted their ambition to collaborate further with Interplast to improve knowledge and resources for treating cleft lip and palate deformities, while also aspiring to establish a dedicated treatment center at the hospital.
The ongoing partnership between Huế Central Hospital and the Interplast Organisation has positively impacted the lives of many underprivileged children, allowing them to achieve healthier outcomes and regain their confidence.
The initiative in Thừa Thiên Huế demonstrates a commendable collaboration between local medical professionals and international volunteers, aimed at aiding children with cleft lip and palate deformities. This effort not only addresses immediate medical needs but also builds a sustainable partnership for future advancements in treatment. By fostering such relationships, more children are able to regain their confidence and health, paving the way for a brighter future.
