Borehole Initiative Transforms Lives in Ruburizi, Burundi

The United Methodist Church has drilled a borehole in Ruburizi, Burundi, funded by the United Methodist Committee on Relief, improving drinking water access for 5,000 residents. This project, initiated in March 2023 following natural disasters, aims to reduce water-borne diseases and alleviate social issues associated with water scarcity. It highlights the church’s commitment to community welfare and public health.

In response to prevalent water-borne diseases, The United Methodist Church has successfully drilled a borehole in Ruburizi, Burundi, with funding from the United Methodist Committee on Relief. This initiative, initiated in March 2023, now provides fresh drinking water to approximately 5,000 residents, significantly improving their daily lives and health.

The borehole project, titled “Relief and Recovery Assistance to Flood Survivors at Nyabunyegeri, Rubirizi and Kirekura,” was prompted by natural disasters that impacted the region in 2022, as explained by Patrick Abro, a missionary from the United Methodist Board of Global Ministries. This initiative aims to combat water shortages exacerbated by flooding and landslides, reducing the time women and girls spend fetching water and minimizing risks associated with long journeys in search of the resource.

The Rev. Cimpaye Valentine has highlighted that the borehole is critical for improving water access in cyclone-affected areas, thereby reducing disease transmission linked to inadequate hygiene. He noted the particular safety concerns for women and girls, reinforcing the need for financial support in alleviating social issues related to water scarcity.

The borehole project in Ruburizi represents a significant step towards enhancing public health, safety, and community resilience. By providing access to clean drinking water, it supports not only the well-being of the immediate community but also fosters local economic development.
