BYD Launches Ultra-Fast EV Charging System Comparable to Gas Fill-Ups

BYD has introduced a new ultra-fast EV charging system that charges vehicles in 5-8 minutes, akin to refueling at a gas station. The company plans to establish over 4,000 charging stations in China to address consumer concerns about charging times. BYD’s production continues to grow, surpassing Tesla in battery electric vehicle output for 2024, though it faces challenges in vehicle quality rankings.

China’s leading auto and energy corporation, BYD, has unveiled an ultra-fast electric vehicle (EV) charging system claimed to rival traditional fuel refills in speed. This system, capable of fully charging BYD’s latest EV offerings within five to eight minutes, aims to alleviate concerns surrounding charging times, which have been significant barriers to the widespread adoption of electric vehicles. The company plans to deploy over 4,000 of these charging stations throughout China.

Sales of battery electric and hybrid vehicles in China surged by 40% last year, reflecting a growing acceptance of EVs among consumers. BYD’s announcement coincided with a notable drop in Tesla’s share prices, indicating a competitive shift in the electric vehicle market. The company has also begun taking pre-sales for upgraded models such as the Han L and Tang L.

BYD has historically focused on battery production and has been continuously enhancing its battery and energy storage technologies. The new flash-chargers are designed to deliver sufficient energy for 400 kilometers (almost 250 miles) in just five minutes, achieved through ultra-high voltage and significant current, according to BYD’s founder, Wang Chuanfu.

Wang stated, “To completely solve users’ anxiety over charging, our pursuit is to make the charging time for EVs as short as the refueling time for fuel vehicles.” The innovative system employs advanced silicon carbide power chips that reach voltage levels of up to 1,500V, and BYD’s Blade lithium-iron phosphate battery is recognized as exceptionally safe and efficient.

In the previous year, BYD produced over 4.3 million new energy vehicles, marking a 41% increase from the prior year. This total includes 1.8 million battery electric vehicles and 2.5 million plug-in hybrids. Despite its advancements, it faces significant competition; particularly, BYD recently outpaced Tesla in battery electric vehicle production for the year 2024.

However, BYD is not without challenges. A recent JD Power study revealed that some of BYD’s models ranked poorly in terms of initial quality among electric vehicles in China. Despite premium models that reach prices around $40,000, the company also offers more affordable options like the Seagull, which retails at approximately $12,000.
