Elvis Lenzy has recently gained attention in Rwanda’s music scene, particularly following the release of his debut single, ‘Tina,’ in January. Born Elvis Inyarubuga on July 2, 2003, in Ngoma District, he faced early adversity, losing his parents and being raised by his aunt. Lenzy attended New Life Christian Academy and later enrolled at Agahozo-Shalom Youth Village, an establishment known for developing musical talents. This environment allowed him to record his first songs and collaborate with peers who remain influential in his career.

At Agahozo, Lenzy discovered his passion for music, often singing wherever he went. He stated in an interview, “I used to sing all the time, everywhere—at home, for friends, for anyone who would listen,” but began recording professionally there, experimenting with his sound. While he appreciates Afrobeat, Lenzy’s musical style combines various influences, as he aims to create enjoyable music. He expressed, “I just want to make music that feels good—to me and to the people listening.” His breakout hit, ‘Tina,’ produced by former classmate Flambeau, fuses smooth melodies with Afro-fusion rhythms, marking him as a promising new artist in Rwanda.

Following the success of ‘Tina,’ Lenzy released ‘Akanyambo’ on March 14, which serves as a tribute to a beautiful girl, drawing inspiration from the culturally significant Inyambo cattle. This song effectively blends Kinyarwanda and English lyrics, conveying deep sentiment and showcasing his cultural heritage. Both ‘Tina’ and ‘Akanyambo’ were produced by Flambeau, while the music video for ‘Akanyambo’ was directed by respected Burundian filmmaker John Elarts, known for his work with various Rwandan artists.

Lenzy’s creative process is flexible, as he sometimes prepares lyrics in advance while at other times begins with melodies. He notes, “As long as I’m inspired, I count it as a great moment artistically.” Despite his rising popularity, Lenzy maintains a humble outlook, stating, “I never set expectations. I just do what I have to do and let the people decide.” His aspirations for the future are substantial, promising more music and projects while expressing readiness for collaborations if they share a common vision.

Remaining grounded in his faith, Lenzy remarked on mentorship: “I don’t really think too much about mentorship. I just believe that everything is in God’s hands.” With his evident dedication and talent, Elvis Lenzy is positioning himself as a significant influencer in Rwandan music.
