Shashi Tharoor Reflects on India’s Position in Russia-Ukraine Conflict

Congress Member of Parliament, Shashi Tharoor, expressed regret over opposing India’s stance on the Russia-Ukraine war, stating he was left with “egg on his face.” He initially criticized India’s reluctance to condemn Russia’s aggression during the conflict’s onset, emphasizing that India’s policy has now positioned it to contribute significantly towards achieving lasting peace.

Reflecting on his previous comments, Tharoor noted, “India has gone through a very complicated and challenging time in negotiating its own stand on the (Ukraine-Russia) crisis.” He mentioned that India’s initial response appeared cautious to avoid offending Russia. Tharoor highlighted the importance of adhering to principles outlined in the UN charter, stressing that violations of sovereignty should not be overlooked.

He further stated, “Therefore, India is in a position where it can make a difference to lasting peace if it was so required in ways that very few countries would be able to.” Notably, he mentioned India’s geographical distance from Europe as an advantage in this context.

Although Tharoor clarified that he could not officially represent the government’s viewpoint as he is in opposition, he indicated that the Indian parliament might endorse sending peacekeepers if an agreement were reached between Russia and Ukraine. He remarked, “I don’t see that happening for Ukraine. I think if it were necessary and there was an agreed peace, I think there would be some willingness to consider.”
