Ukraine Strikes North Korean Howitzers in Kursk Region
Ukrainian forces have destroyed three North Korean howitzers in the Kursk region, as confirmed by the Unmanned Systems Forces Command. These weapons, camouflaged for protection, were used by Russian troops. This operation follows a previous strike involving the same artillery systems, highlighting Ukraine’s effective drone warfare in the conflict.
Recent reports indicate that Ukrainian forces successfully destroyed three North Korean-made howitzers in the Kursk region. This information was confirmed by the Unmanned Systems Forces Command, as reported by Ukrinform. The Russian army had received these artillery systems as military assistance from North Korea, where they were camouflaged within a forest area. To fortify their defense against FPV drones, the Russian forces utilized protective measures known as ‘grills.’
Drone operators were able to identify the self-propelled howitzers, which subsequently came under fire from Ukrainian rocket artillery utilizing high-explosive and cluster munitions. This marks a significant accomplishment, being the second successful strike by Ukrainian forces targeting the Koksan artillery system in the ongoing Russo-Ukrainian conflict. The prior success occurred around a month ago, when operators from the 412th NEMESIS Regiment destroyed a similar system in Luhansk.
The M1978 Koksan self-propelled howitzer is North Korea’s longest-range artillery piece, equipped with a 170mm gun capable of reaching distances of up to 60 kilometers. Originally engineered to strike targets in Seoul from the northern side of the demilitarized zone, these systems are now employed by the Russian Armed Forces to counter significant artillery losses experienced in the conflict with Ukraine.
Further updates from Ukrinform indicate that as of March 18 at 16:00, there have been 76 combat engagements between Ukrainian defenders and Russian troops, signaling ongoing fierce fighting. The most intense confrontations continue to be reported in the Kursk region, highlighting the critical nature of the situation on the frontlines.
In summary, the successful destruction of North Korean howitzers by Ukrainian forces demonstrates a significant military achievement within the ongoing Russo-Ukrainian conflict. The developments illustrate the adaptation of artillery strategies by the Russian army amidst mounting losses. The continued battles in the Kursk region underscore the intensity and ongoing nature of the conflict between the two nations.
