China’s Dobot startup is offering preorders for its humanoid robot, the Dobot Atom, priced at $27,500, expected to enter mass production soon. A Chinese robotics startup has launched preorders for its AI-powered humanoid robot, priced at ¥199,000 ($27,500), with mass production anticipated to begin mid-year. The Dobot Atom, developed by Shenzhen-based Dobot, is designed for tasks like breakfast preparation, pouring milk, and toasting bread as showcased in a recent promotional video.

Standing at 153 centimeters tall and weighing 62 kilograms, the startup, established in 2015 with international offices in Japan, Germany, and the United States, announced its preorder availability last Tuesday. Additionally, Midea Group, a major Chinese home appliance company based in Guangdong, has introduced a prototype humanoid robot capable of performing various functions including shaking hands and opening bottle caps.

Ma Jihua, an industry expert, noted that the introduction of these humanoid robots indicates that China’s technology is moving towards early mass production stages, with expectations that prices will soon align with those of televisions. “China offers a vast market for robotic applications, with immense potential in areas such as eldercare, children’s educational assistance, and household chores,” Ma commented.

In February, Chinese President Xi Jinping encouraged tech entrepreneurs to advance the healthy development of the private sector. Amid heightened competition with the U.S. in technology, Premier Li Qiang stated in a recent report that China aims to bolster self-reliance in science and technology and will support the broad application of AI models in developing intelligent robots and new energy vehicles.

The launch of the Dobot Atom humanoid robot underscores China’s advancements in robotics technology, particularly as it positions for mass production in the near future. The market potential for such innovations is notable, especially in service-focused applications.
