Strengthening Ties: India and Mauritius Collaborate on AI and Digital Infrastructure
India and Mauritius have formed a partnership to leverage AI and Digital Public Infrastructure for development, introducing the “Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions” initiative. This collaboration emphasizes technology exchange, healthcare digitization, and educational support, reaffirming both countries’ commitment to sustainable progress and prosperity.
India and Mauritius have established an agreement to collaborate on the development of artificial intelligence (AI) and Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) to promote human progress. This initiative, known as “Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions,” aims to enhance trade development, capacity-building initiatives, and collective security, with India providing technological support, concessional loans, and grants under this collaboration.
During a meeting on Mauritius’ National Day, India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared the enhancement of the India-Mauritius partnership to an Enhanced Strategic Partnership. He emphasized areas for collaboration, such as infrastructure, digital technology, health, and sustainable growth, with a particular focus on AI and capacity-building efforts.
Since July of the previous year, India has aimed to integrate AI into its digital public infrastructure to improve efficiency. India’s DPI includes significant platforms, such as the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) and Aadhaar, the largest biometric identification system worldwide, showcasing the country’s commitment to redefining its digital ecosystem.
Prime Minister Modi described the combination of DPI and AI as ushering in a transformative era of “Digital Public Intelligence,” which is integral to advancing human development. He highlighted that the enduring friendship between India and Mauritius is rooted in shared ambitions for economic and social progress.
Under the SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region) vision first established a decade ago, the relationship has evolved to include the broader MAHASAGAR initiative, which focuses on trade, sustainable growth, and mutual security. This multifaceted cooperation involves sharing technologies and financial support to enhance regional prosperity.
India has been striving to strengthen partnerships with global trade allies, stimulating domestic manufacturing and job creation. Collaborations with nations like the United Kingdom and the European Union aim to address challenges in AI, climate change, and disaster management while advancing technology efforts.
Reaffirming their commitment to healthcare and education infrastructures, India and Mauritius aim to ensure quality healthcare access for all Mauritians. Leaders have committed to implementing a Digital Health Office system tailored to Mauritius’s needs, alongside a specialist deployment from India to assist in digitizing healthcare services.
The “India-Mauritius Joint Vision for an Enhanced Strategic Partnership” highlights India’s successful digitization initiatives and their positive governance effects, setting the stage for Mauritius’ digital transformation. Both nations will focus on implementing an e-judiciary system and digitizing archives as well.
Enhanced cooperation will extend to ICT, cybersecurity, and capacity building. Modi announced a training program for 500 Mauritian civil servants in India over the next five years, alongside a mutual trade settlement agreement in local currency. Both leaders reiterated their commitment to creating a sustainable and prosperous planet.
To ensure the effective integration of AI, maintaining data quality and ownership through an enterprise blockchain system is essential. This technology will enhance data security and integrity, providing a robust foundation for AI applications in the public and private sectors.
The collaboration between India and Mauritius signifies a strategic partnership aimed at harnessing AI and Digital Public Infrastructure for human development. With initiatives in healthcare, education, and digital transformation, the two nations are poised to enhance trade and mutual security. This partnership is a crucial step in promoting sustainable growth and addressing challenges through innovative technology. Together, they envision a prosperous future built on shared principles and cooperative efforts.
