Vice President Koung Backs Samuel Kogar for Nimba County By-Election
Vice President Jeremiah Koung has endorsed Samuel Kogar of the MDR for the Nimba County by-election scheduled for April 22, 2025. This election follows the death of Prince Johnson, the county’s influential senator. Koung emphasized the necessity for ethnic balance in the county by urging the Mah people to support the Dan candidates.
Vice President Jeremiah Koung has formally endorsed Samuel Kogar, the candidate from the Movement for Democracy and Reconstruction (MDR), in the upcoming by-election set for April 22, 2025. This election arises after the passing of prominent Nimba County Senator and MDR founder, Prince Johnson, in November 2024. The National Elections Commission (NEC) recently announced a total of eight preliminary candidates for the election.
In a telephone call broadcast via community radio in Nimba County, Koung, a member of the ruling Unity Party, expressed his support for Kogar, asserting that he is the ideal candidate to succeed the late Johnson. “I will support Mack Gblinwon, the candidate of the Citizens Movement for Change (CMC) in a different election but not this one. I believe Kogar has all it takes to replace the late Johnson,” stated Koung.
During his remarks, Koung appealed to the Mah people of Nimba to permit the Dan people to participate in this election. He urged them to prioritize balance within the county, stating, “I am begging the Mah people! I think the Mah people should leave this election for the Dan people since we already have a Mah Senator. Let’s keep the balance to make the County stable. Let’s keep our county together and it will be in our interest.”
Koung’s endorsement eliminates any ambiguities regarding his support for Kogar, contrasting with his previous decision to withhold formal endorsement during the last year’s by-election when Nyan Twanyen was appointed as senator after Koung assumed the vice presidency.
The endorsement of Samuel Kogar by Vice President Jeremiah Koung establishes a clear support for Kogar in the forthcoming by-election in Nimba County. This decision not only responds to the recent death of a notable senator, Prince Johnson, but also appeals for community unity and balance among the local ethnic groups in the county. Koung’s public statements reaffirm his commitment to Kogar’s suitability for the role and his emphasis on inclusivity within the electoral process.
