Dramatic Escape Leads to Re-Arrest of Armed Robbery Suspect in Harare

Zinyengere’s capture comes amidst further developments regarding the prison officer involved in his escape.

In addition to the armed robbery charge, Zinyengere now faces multiple offenses including illegal possession of a firearm, unlawful escape from custody, and carjacking, having stolen a Mazda Demio outside the Harare Magistrates Court. His escape has prompted ongoing investigations into the misconduct of prison personnel, specifically officer Donald Madzinga, who is now accused of enabling Zinyengere’s escape.

Madzingan, 39, stands charged in court for allegedly facilitating the escape of Zinyengere and another inmate, Richard Marondera, who was apprehended shortly after the incident. Both individuals are currently on trial for armed robbery in connection with an incident at Quest Financial Services in February of the previous year, which resulted in the theft of US$720,000.

The prosecution asserts that Madzinga conspired with the inmates, receiving a revolver delivered by Zinyengere’s relative, Tinotenda. Madzinga further facilitated communication between the two prisoners and their accomplice regarding their escape plan. On March 21, 2025, the inmates reportedly concealed the firearm in their pants for use during the escape, which involved them hijacking a vehicle while being escorted back to detention.

Madzingan is expected to return to court for a bail hearing under the supervision of Magistrate Marewanazvo Gofa, as the case against him and the security lapses surrounding Zinyengere’s escape continue to unfold.
