Sowore Accuses Nigeria Police of Smear Campaign Amid Advocacy for Reform
Omoyele Sowore alleges the Nigeria Police Force is conducting a smear campaign against him for opposing corruption and abuse. He reported that police circulated a warning about him on a WhatsApp platform, cautioning officers about his intention to record their misconduct. Sowore further discussed his failed attempt to visit detained TikToker Timothy Gabriel, emphasizing his ongoing advocacy for police reform in Nigeria.
Omoyele Sowore, a renowned human rights activist and leader of the RevolutionNow Movement, has accused the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) of orchestrating a smear campaign against him due to his vocal opposition to corruption and abuse within the police system. This accusation follows the circulation of messages on a police WhatsApp platform, which cautioned officers against Sowore, suggesting he secretly records their misconduct while on duty.
The leaked message identified Sowore and warned police personnel to avoid opportunities to engage with him. It alleged that he employs covert recording devices integrated into items such as eyeglasses and pens to document police misconduct. It asserted, “He is always looking for opportunity to indict policemen on duty. If he offer you anything while on duty don’t take it.”
Sowore also detailed a recent attempt to visit Timothy Gabriel, a TikToker who has been detained for approximately 50 days. His detention reportedly arose from a request made by Senator Remi Tinubu, the First Lady of Nigeria. Sowore and Gabriel’s family experienced obstruction when they attempted to visit him at the Force Investigation Department (FCID), despite adhering to visitation protocols.
He further noted, “Today, a Nigeria Police Force’s WhatsApp group now began posting egregious discussions, showcasing their corrupt and inhumane attitude considering that they know I will not condone the extortion, torture and inhumane treatment of Nigerian citizens.” After persistent advocacy, Gabriel was ultimately released on bail and has regained his freedom.
Sowore maintained his promise to advocate for sweeping police reforms, emphasizing that law enforcement officers must commit to embracing change to improve the overall conditions within Nigeria.
In summary, Omoyele Sowore has publicly condemned the smear campaign initiated by the Nigeria Police Force against him due to his activism against police misconduct. His continued efforts led to the release of Timothy Gabriel, highlighting the persistent challenges faced by activists in Nigeria. Sowore remains steadfast in his advocacy for police reform to ensure a better society, reiterating that the police must embrace necessary changes.
