Three Suspects Arrested in Illegal Mining Operation in Klerksdorp

Three suspects from Zimbabwe and Mozambique were arrested for illegal mining at Shivan Mine Dam during Operation Vala Umgodi. The police, acting on a tip-off, confiscated explosives and mining equipment. The suspects will face multiple charges in court. The Acting Police Commissioner encouraged public reporting of crime for community safety.

On March 27, 2025, three individuals from Zimbabwe and Mozambique, aged between 32 and 35, were apprehended for illegal mining at Shivan Mine Dam in Klerksdorp during Operation Vala Umgodi. This operation was conducted by the Dr Kenneth Kaunda Illegal Mining Task Team, with assistance from the Explosive Unit to undermine illegal mining activities in the region.

Colonel Adele Myburgh, spokesperson for the North West police, revealed that law enforcement acted on a tip-off. Upon arrival at the mining site, police observed numerous individuals engaged in illicit mining. As police approached, many fled; however, three suspects (two from Zimbabwe and one from Mozambique) were arrested with several explosives found on-site.

The police discovered a substantial cache of explosives, comprising 20 capped fuses, 20 blasting cartridges, and 120 meters of detonating cord. Additionally, they confiscated 13 generators, two water pumps, and five mining drills. The suspects are set to face charges in the Klerksdorp Magistrate’s Court for unlawful possession of explosives, illegal mining, and violating the Immigration Act of 2002.

Major General Patrick Asaneng, acting North West Police Commissioner, commended the police for their diligent efforts in this operation. He urged the public to report criminal activities, including using the South African Police Service (SAPS) Crime Stop line at 08600 10111 or anonymously through the MySAPS application. For incidents of extortion, he provided the hotline number: 080 091 1011.

The recent arrest of three suspects involved in illegal mining at Shivan Mine Dam demonstrates law enforcement’s commitment to combating such illicit activities. The operation highlighted the collaboration between various police units and the importance of public cooperation in reporting criminal activities. As authorities continue to address illegal mining and related crimes, public awareness plays a crucial role in ensuring community safety and justice.
