Kenyan Government Advises Citizens in Myanmar and Thailand Post-Earthquake
The Kenyan Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued advisories to citizens in Myanmar and Thailand following a devastating earthquake. With over 1,700 fatalities reported, the government emphasized safety, emergency preparedness, and the importance of registering with local embassies. Kenyans were urged to remain in touch and support one another during this crisis.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Kenya has issued a statement concerning its citizens in Myanmar and Thailand, following recent earthquakes that resulted in over 1,700 casualties. Principal Secretary of Diaspora Affairs, Roseline Njogu, conveyed the government’s solidarity with those affected by the disaster, emphasizing the need for vigilance and safety.
The Kenyan government has advised its nationals in these regions to stay informed of local news and official communications regarding aftershocks and emergency measures. They were also urged to refrain from unnecessary travel to the hardest-hit areas to prioritize personal safety amidst the ongoing crisis.
In its safety advisory, the Kenyan government recommended that individuals located in compromised structures relocate to open spaces whenever possible. “Be vigilant about falling debris, landslides, or damaged infrastructure,” the Ministry cautioned in its message. Furthermore, Kenyans in Myanmar and Thailand were encouraged to register with the Kenyan Embassy in Bangkok or the nearest East African Community diplomatic mission for necessary support.
Kenyans were reminded to adhere to directives from local authorities, including evacuation orders and safety regulations provided by disaster management agencies. The government also encouraged citizens to check on their compatriots, particularly students and vulnerable individuals, ensuring that everyone is safe and accounted for.
Recent reports indicated that the earthquake struck near Mandalay, Myanmar, causing tremors felt throughout Southeast Asia, including Thailand. While the Kenyan population in Thailand is estimated at around 400, the exact number in Myanmar remains uncertain due to issues related to human trafficking in the region.
In light of the recent natural disaster, the Kenyan government has prioritized the welfare and safety of its citizens in Myanmar and Thailand. The advisories highlight the importance of registering with embassies, adhering to local safety protocols, and ensuring communication among the Kenyan community. The situation continues to be monitored as the government urges all citizens to stay safe and informed.
