NIA Intervenes in Human Trafficking Via ‘Dunki’ Route with Arrest of Key Suspect

The NIA has arrested Gagandeep Singh, a key figure in a human trafficking operation sending victims illegally to the US through the ‘dunki’ route. This operation involved significant payments from victims and dangerous travel routes, leading to reports of exploitation and abuse. Investigations continue in collaboration with various law enforcement agencies.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has apprehended a pivotal suspect in connection with a human trafficking scheme involving illegal immigration to the United States through the notorious ‘dunki’ route. This term, derived from “donkey,” describes the perilous illicit paths taken by immigrants attempting to enter countries like the United States without official documentation, often facilitated by human trafficking networks.

Gagandeep Singh, also known as Goldie, a resident of Tilak Nagar in west Delhi, was taken into custody following allegations that he had received approximately Rs 45 lakh from a victim from Tarn Taran district in Punjab for illegal immigration. The victim was reportedly sent to the United States via the ‘dunki’ route in December 2024.

Subsequently, the victim was deported back to India by US authorities on February 15, prompting him to file a complaint against Goldie, the accused agent. Although the matter was initially filed by the Punjab Police, it was later transferred to the NIA for further investigation on March 13.

NIA inquiries uncovered that Goldie did not hold a valid license or permits for facilitating overseas travel; he reportedly utilized the ‘dunki’ route to send the victim to the US through Spain, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Mexico. Investigative findings indicated that the victim endured physical abuse and exploitation, including having his dollars stolen by Goldie’s associates during the grueling journey.

In response to a query presented in the Lok Sabha, Union Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh disclosed that from January 2025 to the present, a total of 636 Indian nationals have been deported from the US to India.

The arrest of Gagandeep Singh marks a significant breakthrough in combating human trafficking routes, particularly the ‘dunki’ route used for illegal immigration to the United States. The NIA’s ongoing investigation highlights the grave risks posed to individuals who are subjected to danger and exploitation during their journeys, underscoring the serious challenges in curbing such illicit activities.
