Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju, a Nigerian boxer, tragically passed away during a match in Ghana on the sixth set of the bout. Previously ranked first in his category, he lost consciousness during the third round of the Ghana Professional Boxing League competition against Ghanaian opponent Jon Mbanugu at the Bukom Boxing Arena in Accra.
The Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) has confirmed the news of his death, stating that after receiving initial medical assistance, he was urgently taken to Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, where he was pronounced dead approximately 30 minutes post-arrival.
Remi Aboderin, the Secretary-General of the Nigerian boxing governing body, remarked that Oluwasegun was an unbeatable fighter who tragically died in the ring. He expressed deep sorrow, noting, “Actually, we were overwhelmed. [This is] not something we ever thought could happen. We will fulfill our duties to support the family.”
Before facing Mbanugu, Oluwasegun had a fight record comprising 23 matches, with 13 wins and 8 losses.
