Kenyans in Myanmar and Thailand Urged to Register for Earthquake Assistance

Kenyans in Myanmar and Thailand are urged to register with the Kenyan Embassy in Bangkok for emergency assistance following a devastating 7.7-magnitude earthquake. Additionally, they are advised to avoid impacted areas and maintain vigilance against potential dangers.

On April 1st, Diaspora Affairs Principal Secretary, Roseline Njogu, called upon Kenyans residing in Myanmar and Thailand to register for emergency assistance at the Kenyan Embassy in Bangkok. This initiative follows the devastating earthquake that struck on May 28th, necessitating real-time updates and support for impacted individuals.

Kenyans are encouraged to register at the Kenyan Embassy in Bangkok or at the closest East African Community diplomatic mission. They can reach out for assistance through the hotline at +66990745752 or via email at [email protected].

Furthermore, Principal Secretary Njogu advised Kenyans in the region to refrain from unnecessary travel to areas severely affected by the earthquake. In case one is in a damaged or unstable building, they should relocate to a safe, open area and maintain vigilance regarding potential threats such as falling debris and landslides.

In addition, Kenyans are urged to check on each other, particularly students, diaspora workers, and those in vulnerable situations, to ensure their safety and well-being. The earthquake, which measured 7.7 on the Richter scale, primarily impacted Myanmar’s eastern region close to the Thai border, leading to extensive destruction.

The call from Principal Secretary Roseline Njogu underscores the importance of community support among Kenyans in Myanmar and Thailand following the recent earthquake. By registering with the embassy, they can access vital resources and maintain safety amid the crisis. Awareness of their surroundings and checking on fellow compatriots is also crucial for ensuring collective well-being during these challenging times.
