She stated, “I know they take criminals there. And my husband’s not a criminal.” Vasquez Sura lost touch with Abrego Garcia following his arrest by ICE on March 12 and learned of his deportation only when she recognized him among detainees in a prison photograph, which caused her great distress.

Vasquez Sura, who shares a disabled son with Abrego Garcia, praised him as an exceptional father. Despite entering the U.S. without documentation as a teenager in 2011, he received protected status due to fears of gang persecution in El Salvador, according to CBS Mornings. Abrego Garcia reportedly had traffic violations but no criminal record.

The Trump administration recognized the deportation mistake, yet U.S. officials claim they lack the authority to retrieve him now that he is in the hands of the Salvadoran government. In a press briefing, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt attempted to characterize Abrego Garcia as a gang leader, citing unsubstantiated allegations of gang involvement and human trafficking, which his lawyer describes as mere hearsay.

After his arrest, Abrego Garcia was detained in Texas, informed incorrectly that his immigration status had altered, and he has had no contact with his family since March 15, leaving Vasquez Sura anxious for his well-being. “He never made that call,” she lamented.
