Niger Police Arrest Soldier for Alleged Armed Robbery and Assault

The Niger State Police have arrested soldier Private Sadiq Sani for allegedly assaulting and robbing businessman Abdulrahman Salihu. Sani reportedly attacked Salihu with a knife after a failed transaction at Salihu’s shop on Eid-el-Fitr. Following his arrest, he will face military and civilian legal action.

Police in Niger State have apprehended Private Sadiq Sani, a soldier accused of armed robbery and assault against businessman Abdulrahman Salihu. The incident occurred on Eid-el-Fitr when Sani visited Salihu’s shop under the guise of purchasing shirts and requested account details for an alleged e-money transfer.

Subsequently, Sani purportedly sent a fraudulent payment alert, which raised suspicions in Salihu. When he insisted on confirming the money transfer before allowing Sani to take the goods, the situation escalated. In a shocking turn of events, Sani brandished a knife and severely injured Salihu, amputating his arm before fleeing the scene, despite attempts by neighbors to apprehend him.

Law enforcement later located Sani at his residence in Limawa, Minna, where he resisted arrest, engaging in a violent confrontation with armed police. Following the confrontation, law enforcement successfully apprehended him and took him into custody. The military police in Minna have also been involved in the investigation, with Captain U.S. Ibrahim from the 313 Brigade tasked with pursuing the case.

Ibrahim stated that Sani would be formally charged and subjected to court martial at the defense headquarters in Abuja, subsequently returning to face prosecution in civilian court. Niger State Police spokesman Wasiu Abiodun confirmed the arrest of Sani and an accomplice, reaffirming that both individuals are currently in custody at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation and subsequent legal action. Abiodun detailed how Salihu was brought to the police station with severe injuries, confirming the violent nature of the altercation that resulted in the amputation of Salihu’s fingers.

In summary, the arrest of Private Sadiq Sani highlights serious issues concerning personal safety and criminal conduct by individuals in authority. The case exemplifies the collaboration between civilian and military law enforcement to ensure accountability. As investigations continue, the commitment to legal proceedings against Sani and his accomplice reflects the serious societal consequences of such violent crimes.
